Returning home from a lustful escapade seems so much easier than returning home from a frozen anger that has rooted itself in the deepest corners of my being. My resentment is not something that can be easily distinguished and dealt with rationally. It has attached itself to the underside of my virtue. I am the elder brother, but just as or even more lost than his younger brother. Lost – lost in resentment, caught in jealousy, imprisoned in obedience lived out as slavery. Can the elder son come home?

Rock and Sand

We live in a culture obsessed with making good impressions on people that our actual lives don't measure up to. We often like the idea of something rather than its reality. In this story from the end of the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus says that those who listen to his teaching but fail to live it out are building houses on sand that will not stand up to the storms of life. Instead, he invites us to be wise -- to build lives on the solid foundation of both listening to his words and putting them into practice.

Ask, Seek, Knock
